Myth Monday: Salon Hair Care Products VS. Drug Store
Have you ever wondered if those salon shampoos and sprays are really worth the extra cash? Well, we found out in most cases they are. Salon products generally contain higher quality, more expensive ingredients that are designed to consistently provide more intensive cleansing, moisturizing and conditioning results. It is a rare to find drug store products that contain the high quality ingredients that salon products contain. You can, however, try to match certain ingredients found in the higher quality brands to the cheaper ones.

Myth Monday: A Pop Of Bold Colors
Using a pop of a bold color always looks great, especially for WTW. Now I’m not talking about color blocking. I’m talking about, for example, pairing blue bangles with an orange bag while keeping your outfit neutral. By using two different pops of color you give your look a fresh spin and make a trendy statement. This is a time where colors are emerging, and we are finding new and creative ways to wear them together without becoming overwhelming.
This photo is from Burberry’s spring fashion show. Loving the use of a bright colored belt with the leather, and the v-cut shooties are gonna be a hot item as we head into fall.
Myth Monday: Mixing Black with Blue
Black and blue often get a bad rap because they can be so close in shade that it’s sometimes difficult to tell them apart, not to mention that wearing a black shirt with navy pants can come off looking a little drab. Here are a few tips for the right way to pair these two colors:
Accessorize: Say you’re wearing skinny denim jeans and a black sweater. Adding red heels and red lipstick is an easy way to make the black-and-blue look a chic one.
Contrast: When you’re wearing navy with black, you should try to play up the differences in tone. Wearing a white shirt under a navy blazer with a black skirt will help delineate the hues, making your outfit look intentional instead of accidental.
Brighten Up: Opt for brighter and bolder blues like cobalt or sky blue if you plan to pair them with black. The brighter hue will keep your outfit from looking washed out.
We love how reality star Audrina Patridge pairs a dark blue dress with a black blazer, she breaks the look up with a bright waist belt and white bag. Mixing these colors can really make for a sophisticated look.

Myth Monday: Hair Can Become Immune to Your Shampoo
Many women think that their hair can become immune to their shampoo if they use it for a long period of time and this is a total myth. The reason why many think their shampoo has become immune to their hair is because they feel it has stopped making their hair feel as good as when they started using it. In fact, what actually happens is product build up. This can happen with any kind of shampoo and switching out your favorite for another brand won’t make a difference. There is a solution to making your hair healthy again, clarifying shampoo. Clarifying shampoo cleanses the hair shaft, removing excess product build up; not only from shampoo but also from everything else we put in our hair, giving it a healthy shine look and feel. Pantene Pro v is a great buy for a low price and if you want to splurge a little, Frederic Fekkai has a great smelling Apple Cider clarifying shampoo.
A tip to remember when using clarifying shampoo: only use it when needed, not on a daily basis which can dry your hair out and make it feel rough.
Myth Monday: Eye Shadow Colors
Many women find it challenging to find which eye shadow colors will look best on them when in the endless make-up aisles of the drug store. To help narrow your search down, we want to make sure one myth you should NEVER follow is to match eye shadow color to color of your eye. In fact, it’s just the opposite. If you really want to make your eyes pop use contrasting colors. Here are some shadow colors to use based on eye colors:
- Green/Hazel: Plum, deep browns and light golden hues, green eyed Kristin Stewart uses contrasting plum and golden hues together to create a smoky eye look.
- Brown: Soft pinks, natural beige and shades of bronze.
- Blue: Smokey charcoals, chocolates and bright berry tones.
Myth Monday: Avoid Clashing Colors
You may think that certain colors should never go together, for example pink and red or orange and green. Well put those thoughts in the past because now it’s all about experimenting with colors and showing your own unique personality through your color choices. Colors for summer is one of the hottest trends so don’t be afraid to use them. Mix only two to three different colors at a time because any more than that may be unflattering to your body shape. Keep in mind that if you choose to use different colors for your outfit be sure to make either your shoes or bag neutral. We love actress Camilla Belle’s color combo, to put together your own colorful summer outfit visit Dots online.
How many divas out there are daring enough to mix colors?
Myth Monday: The Art of Mixing Prints
Mixing patterns for many is a big fashion DON’T. But if done in artistic way this can look absolutely great. Men do some mixing with the pattern and prints when they wear shirts, suits and ties. Even interior designers do the mixing of patterns and prints. So why can’t we? There are just a few things to remember.
1-Different patterns should be different scales. In other words, if you’re wearing a big floral print skirt, your top should be a smaller print like thin pinstripes or small dots.
2- Your patterns should share the same color scheme. For example, if your polka dot top is red, black and white, your plaid skirt should also be red, black and white.
3- Spring and summer are great seasons to experiment. If you’re fearful of mixing patterns, start small with accessories like a light scarf or printed sandals.
4- Stripes and floral patterns were made for each other. This tried and true combination is easy to work into an outfit – it’s the perfect combo to try if you’re unsure about this look.
Be confident! This trend isn’t for the timid. Wear your outfit with some attitude, and everyone will admire your fearless fashion sense.
Myth Monday: Rinsing hair with beer will make it thicker
Bizarre, yes but its true! I couldn’t believe this when I heard it but a final rinse of beer at the end of your shower will leave you with more voluminous strands. Supposedly, the beer builds up the circumference of the hair shafts giving it more lift. It can also leave hair softer, shiny and possibly help it grow. One caveat: You may smell like a frat house until the scent dissipates. Instead, try a thickening shampoo with hops, like Aussie Real Volume Shampoo ($4). I think I’ll stick with the shampoo!
Myth Monday: Chocolate and Breakouts
I love holidays that involve candy of any kind! And since its Valentine’s Day, many of us will most likely receive that giant heart shaped box of goodies, which is why we are dedicating this Myth Monday to chocolate!
A lot of people say that chocolate can cause blemishes, others swear it can’t. So who’s right? Well chocolate lovers will take great pleasure in noting that no one specific type of food has been proven to cause or worsen acne! If your diet is poor it can definitely affect the quality of your skin’s appearance, but no one particular item will trigger this.
So if you are going to nosh on that big box of chocolates, balance the rest of your day with a little fruits and vegetables and stay well hydrated. Enjoy!
